Shanshan is still entering as a Category 2 typhoon, which means sustained winds of more than 170 kilometers per hour and gusts of more than 200. It made landfall across the small coastal city of Makurazaki in southern Japan, in Kagoshima Prefecture.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the typhoon will cover almost the entire country in the coming days. Authorities have ordered the evacuation of millions of people from areas expected to be hit by the typhoon, and at least three people have been killed in what could be the strongest tropical cyclone to hit the region.
