The driver from Forli decided to end his career in the first class in front of his fans: “She did not go, but it was right to try.” His Yamaha will turn into a Crutchlow
Andrea Dovizioso will leave MotoGP before the end of the season. The official announcement came on the eve of the Silverstone weekend: the Forli rider will race in Misano in September for his last race in the Yamaha of the WithU RNF team, in doing so, ending a season well below his expectations and a career he missed only the most important title, close to multiple times with Ducati. In place, until the end of 2022, the test driver will be racing Cal Crutchlow.

MotoGP, Bagnaia and Espargarò Quartararo Challenge: ‘At Silverstone we are fast’
“In 2012 — Dovi explained — the factory Iwata experience at MotoGP was very positive for me and since then I’ve always thought that, sooner or later, I wanted to get an official contract with Yamaha. That prospect presented itself, in fact. In a rather risky way, during 2021. I decided to give it a try because I believe very strongly in this project and in the potential to do well.”
“Unfortunately, MotoGP has changed profoundly in recent years. The situation is very different since then: I have never felt comfortable with the bike and have not been able to make the most of its potential, despite the precious and continuous help from the team…and all Yamaha.”
And the results did not arrive on the track: “Even if the results are negative, I still consider it a very important life experience. When there are many difficulties, you must have the ability to manage the situation and your emotions well. We did not reach the desired goals, but comparisons with my technicians Yamaha and my team have always been positive and constructive, both for them and for me. The relationship remained professionally fair and interesting even in the most critical moments. It wasn’t clear that it was going to happen.”
“For all of this and for their support, I thank Yamaha, my team, and WithU, as well as the other sponsors involved in the project. It didn’t go as well as we had hoped, but it was right to try. My adventure will end in Misano, but the relationship with all of them. The people involved in this challenge will remain intact until Forever. Thank you all.”
Yamaha Motor Racing Director, Lynn JarvisHe hoped things with Dovizioso would turn out differently. “I would like to start by saying that, of course, we are all sorry that Andrea left the sport earlier than expected. He is a big name in MotoGP and we will miss him in the track. Last year we felt very lucky that he was available and wanted to join our MotoGP when Franky (Morbidelli, Editor) switched to the Yamaha Factory Team, creating the need for a replacement rider for the remainder of the 2021 season. Andrea’s great competence experience and methodical nature were of great importance to Yamaha and the RNF team. The project was designed to span the entire 2022 season.”
“Unfortunately, Andrea struggled to extract maximum potential from M1 and so the results did not arrive, causing understandable frustration. During the summer break he confirmed his desire to retire before the end of the season. We saw fit to correct Andrea. His last race at Misano, the Grand Prix At his home. Of course, Yamaha will continue to give Duffy his full support for the next three races. In the meantime, let’s enjoy his last three races and celebrate the end of his brilliant career at Misano,” he emphasized.
WithU RNF founder and owner was also hoping for a different season, Razlan Razali. “Coming back to the track, after a five-week break, we were looking forward to working on a change of season for Andrea, especially after some positive results in the last two races. However, he has chosen to retire and we respect his decision. We regret to see an experienced rider like Andrea leave the championship and not He ends the season with us.But we understand that he clearly said he struggled to feel comfortable with the bike and adapt his riding style to the way he should be driven.Even if we can’t achieve the desired results together,we are still honored and happy to have such a great name as Andrea In our team. We thank him for his support, expertise and contribution. We will continue to give him maximum support in the next three races.”
“This announcement and Andrea’s early retirement is not quite what we wanted as a team, but it was also understood by Andrea, who clearly expected a lot more from his comeback than he was able to do – the team manager analyzed, Wilko Zellenberg -. We tried to follow him as much as possible and in all sectors throughout the course, but in the end he decided to stop after the Misano GP. We have to accept his decision. We can only appreciate his honesty and his decision. We will do everything we can to continue to push and achieve results for the team.”
