It wasn’t a great night for the Boston Celtics in Detroit, as not only did they fall to the Pistons 104-92, but they also saw Kevin Garnett go down with a leg injury. Things have been setting up nicely for the Celtics so far this season, but there’s no doubt that the injury bug is going to play a big factor in this team’s success this season. On the other side of things, the Pistons might not be as bad as we thought they were. In fact, Tracy McGrady is starting to make some shots like the McGrady of old, and given the struggles by some of the other players on the team, he might become the primary scoring option for that team if he keeps playing well. Well the Spurs-Lakers game last night was rather anti-climactic, as the Spurs took it to the Lakers down the stretch, and came up with the 97-82 win at home. There seems to be some serious problems with this Laker team right now, and they better figure out a way to turn it around quickly. It’s still early in the season, but it’s clear that Kobe Bryant is not happy at all with the way this team is playing, and when your star is upset, that’s not good for anyone in the Laker organization. Things just keep getting worse for the Sacramento Kings, as last night they had a chance to knock off the Clippers and win for the first time in a long time. But, that didn’t happen, as the Clippers came out with a 100-99 victory. Tyreke Evans had a chance to hit a game-tying free throw…..and then had another chance at the buzzer with a quick shot inside the point. Neither shot went in, and the struggles continue for the Kings. On the other hand, the Clippers are starting to play some very good basketball, and this is a team that is certainly on the upswing right now. Continue Reading

There were some very intriguing games around the Association last night, with some rather interesting finishes. The Pistons forced overtime against the Bulls after some big shots by Tracy McGrady, but lost 95-92. The Clippers almost pulled a Clipper against the Suns, but Eric Gordon‘s steal late let them hang on for a five-point win. And the Sixers somehow came back to beat the Nuggets in Denver, which was undoubtedly one of the worst losses of the team for a Nuggets’ team that seems to be heading in the wrong direction. Before we get to yesterday’s action, I hope all of you had a fantastic Christmas and got to spend some quality time with your family. As for the games, well, the biggest one of them all turned out to be a dud, as the Heat took it to the Lakers from pretty much start to finish in route to a 96-80 victory at Staples Center. While some will use the “it’s just a regular season game” excuse, I’m not sure that works here. The Heat are clearly finding their chemistry, and the Lakers are about to have to do some serious searching for their own chemistry. Continue Reading

NBA Game Rankings: Christmas Day!

Christmas has finally arrived, and while you’re opening your gifts, there will be some good basketball being played in the Association. Obviously the hype has been towards one game in particular, but there are four other matchups taking place around the league that should be closely contested games as well. Continue Reading

Well the New York Knicks finally got the home win they were looking for last night, as they defeated the Thunder at MSG to snap their three-game losing streak. The Knicks looked pretty good defensively for the first time in a while, and that’s obviously what will fuel them if they are to make a deep run in the playoffs. They are still clearly a few steps behind the top teams in the East, but if they can play solid defense on a consistent basis, it will at least give them a chance in a playoff series against better teams. The surprise of the night in the Association last night was the Milwaukee Bucks going into Los Angeles and taking it to the Lakers in the second half. The Lakers certainly didn’t look like a championship team, as their defense was just awful. But you also have to give credit to Bucks’ backup point guard Earl Boykins, who stepped his game up big time in the absence of Brandon Jennings. The Bucks are starting to look like that playoff team that a lot of us anticipated they would be before the season started. Continue Reading

If you didn’t believe in the Dallas Mavericks before last night, chances are your opinion changed a little bit after they went into Miami and knocked off the streaking Heat. Before the season started, I thought Dallas would be the same kind of team they’ve always been, however, they seemed to really be focusing on the defensive end, and that’s paid dividends in their success so far this season. While they obviously have to go through the likes of the Spurs and Lakers to get to the NBA Finals, there’s nothing so far that has shown that they couldn’t beat either one of them in a playoff series.
