Spurs With 6 Players on Court, Referees Don’t Realize

Attempting to run out the clock and seal the team’s victory, Mavericks guard Monta Ellis fired the ball across the court. Yet, there were still 1.3 seconds remaining in regulation, allowing the Spurs to inbound the ball. Inexplicably, however, six Spurs’ players were on the court. As the SB Nation graphic above points out, there are five men over or right by the half-court line and one player taking out the ball from the further baseline.

The referees didn’t notice until Ellis called it to their attention with 0.4 seconds left. Though this may have given San Antonio a competitive advantage, the strange incident did not alter the outcome of the game. The Mavs defeated the Spurs 113-111.

Let’s take a step away from NBA Playoff coverage and recognize Jamal Crawford. One of the keys to the Clippers’ success this season, Crawford will be named as the 2013-14 NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year, according to Marc Stein of ESPN. This will be the second time Crawford has taken home the honor.

Competitors for the award included Taj Gibson, Manu Ginobili and Reggie Jackson, among others. Crawford, 34, averaged 18.6 points on 41.6 percent shooting, recording 3.2 assists and 2.3 rebounds in 69 games this season. He helped Los Angeles reach the Western Conference’s three-seed with an impressive record of 57-25.

As Stein notes, the NBA is delaying handing out the hardware due to the Donald Sterling controversy, therefore delaying the Crawford award ceremony.

More details to come…
