In a recent episode of the great podcast, You Made It Weird with Pete Holmes, the legendary comedian, Sinbad, revealed that when he was a senior in high school, San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, recruited him to play at the Air Force Academy.

From the 1 hour and 4 minute mark of YMIW:

“I got recruited by Popovich in high school to go to the Air Force Academy. Popovich from the Spurs. I love Pop, man. He is a good cat, man..” – Sinbad

Pop was an assistant coach at the Air Force Academy from 1973 to 1979 working under Hank Egan. Egan would eventually become an assistant coach with the Spurs once Pop took over as head coach. According to Lost Lettermen, Sinbad didn’t want to go to the Air Force Academy because he sported a glorious afro at the time:

In a 1997 Ebony interview, Sinbad admitted that when the officials at the Air Force Academy told him he’d have to cut is afro, he lost his desire to play there.

Said Sinbad: “I was like, ‘Cut my ‘fro? No way!’ They just said I’d get over it, but I didn’t want to get over it.”

Sinbad enrolled at the University of Denver but still holds Pop in high regard:

If Sinbad had went to the Air Force Academy, would Popovich have adopted a more wise cracking interview persona? We can only dream.
