2013 was supposed to be the start of something new for the Cleveland Cavaliers, but none of that went to plan. Before the season kicked off, they were expected to compete for a spot in playoffs with their new-and-improved roster, which featured the number one pick in the 2013 draft, Anthony Bennett. However, they recorded a 33-49 record in the inferior conference, falling way out of the post-season picture, and the franchise’s cornerstone, Kyrie Irving, was supposedly growing weary. Not only that, they were in dire need of rebuffing their roster, and it had become clear that after just one season, Mike Brown wasn’t the man for the head coaching job.
Luckily for them, though, even after all that mess, things have already taken a turn for the better.
First, the Cavaliers coaxed David Blatt away from Maccabi Tel Aviv after he led the team to their second championship in four years. While he has no experience in the NBA, he has been widely regarded as the best coach in Europe over the last few years and he has a reputation for being a fantastic player-coach. Then, they drafted Andrew Wiggins with the number one overall pick, and while he still has a lot of developing to do, he is expected to be the best player to come out of this loaded draft class within the next five-or-so years. And finally, within the first few hours of free agency, word got out that Kyrie Irving will sign a five-year, $90 million extension with the Cavaliers, and according to this video his friend posted on Instagram at 5:00 AM, he’s really excited about it.
That’s the face of a happy man. Get excited, Cleveland.
