KD is Not Nice: Thoughts on the NBA for 1/22/14

  • Kevin Durant was doing Kevin Durant things last night, finishing with 46 points on 17-25(!!!) shooting. Plus, he added 5 rebounds and 4 assists as the Thunder defeated the Trail Blazers to take the Northwest Division lead. Durant’s hot streak has been legendary. He hasn’t scored less than 30 points since January 5 against the Celtics (when he played just 27 minutes and still scored 21). For the month of January he’s averaging 37 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists a night, while shooting 52 percent from the field and 39 percent from three. And remember, he’s just 25 years old! The Thunder are playing the Spurs on ESPN tonight, so you should probably check that one out because Durant is appointment viewing at this point.

  • Another player who’s been playing well lately, Rudy Gay, also had a monster night last night. Gay dropped 41 points (16-25 shooting!), 8 rebounds and 5 assists on the Pelicans, as the Kings won, 114-97. Gay has always been able to score, but as we’ve noted before, the most impressive thing about his stretch in Sacramento is his shooting, which has been markedly improved. In his last five games he’s shooting 53 percent from the field and 57 percent from three. With the win, the Kings also pulled themselves to just a half game behind the Pelicans, who have been struggling (due in large part to injuries) lately, going 1-9 in their last 10 outings. The Kings aren’t going to make the playoffs, but they’ve distanced themselves from the Jazz a bit at the bottom of the Western Conference.

  • The Celtics and Heat played to a close finish last night, with the Heat pulling out the win, 93-86. LeBron was LeBron, putting the game away in the 4th quarter by scoring nine of the Heat’s last 11 points. He ended up with 29 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists on the night. Looking up some stats last night, I found this. So, yeah, LeBron is pretty good.

  • Also, Greg Oden did this to Jeff Green, which was pretty cool.

  • One closing note, Josh Smith is dangerously close to joining the #MoreShotsThanPoints club.
