The Memphis Grizzlies have suffered a number of injuries – most notably to big man, and reigning Defensive Player of the Year, Marc Gasol – that have derailed their season.
A year after reaching the Western Conference Finals for the first time in franchise history, the Grizzlies are just 13-16 and three and a half games out of the playoff race in the West.
Last night, they inched closer to a postseason appearance with a 21 point win over the Denver Nuggets – another team struggling after a great season last year – thanks to a big performance from the bench.
Four players on the bench scored in double figures, including Mike Miller and James Johnson. Miller scored 11 and handed out 4 assists, while Johnson finished with 14 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists.
The two also combined for the Pass of the Night with a big alley-oop.
Late in the 2nd quarter, the Grizzlies took control of a loose ball after a deflected pass. Jerryd Bayless began dribbling up the left hand side of the court and, spotting Miller sprinting up ahead, lobbed an outlet pass up to him. Miller grabbed the pass and before dribbling, lobbed up an alley-oop for Johnson, who was barreling down the court.
Johnson rose high and snatched the ball out of the air, before he slammed it home for two.
