Boston Celtics Trade Fab Melo To Memphis Grizzlies For Donte Greene

The era of the most fabulous Melo is over in Boston.

Earlier today, it was announced that the Celtics shipped Melo and cash to the Grizzlies in exchange for Donte Greene.

The 7-foot Brazilian, by way of Syracuse had an entertaining time in Boston off the court, but an underwhelming one on it. From breaking a chair, to running into a doorframe and getting a concussion, Melo’s highlights came more from his mishaps than his basketball ability. A monster triple-double in a D-League game was the only sign of potential from the big man.

Melo appeared in just 6 games for the Celtics, playing just 6 meaningless minutes and averaging just 1.2 points and 0.5 rebounds a game. And in the Orlando Summer league, he didn’t show much in the way of improving on those numbers.

Donte Greene, also a former Syracuse Orangeman, hasn’t shown much on the court either in his short NBA career.

Greene’s contract is non-guaranteed, for $1 million. As Chris Forsberg of ESPNBoston.com points out, if the Celtics waive the contract, they can drop under the luxury tax mark. That would mean a big savings for a team that doesn’t have championship aspirations.

With big men Kelly Olynyk and Vitor Faverani making their way to Boston this year, it doesn’t seem like there is room for Greene.

In the long run, this trade probably won’t mean much to either team. Greene doesn’t seem like he’ll be long for Boston, and Melo needs a lot of work to turn into a player in the league – if he ever becomes one at all.
