NBA Game Rankings: 12/21/10

If you didn’t believe in the Dallas Mavericks before last night, chances are your opinion changed a little bit after they went into Miami and knocked off the streaking Heat. Before the season started, I thought Dallas would be the same kind of team they’ve always been, however, they seemed to really be focusing on the defensive end, and that’s paid dividends in their success so far this season. While they obviously have to go through the likes of the Spurs and Lakers to get to the NBA Finals, there’s nothing so far that has shown that they couldn’t beat either one of them in a playoff series. The Boston Celtics picked up their 13th straight victory yesterday, yet it still seems like this team isn’t getting the attention it deserves. While the Heat have gotten on a streak of their own, and the Magic have made some big trades, we still have to remember that the Celtics are the ones with the rings. This team looks better than ever right now, and it’s hard to find any weaknesses that could cause them to struggle. Plain and simple, while the Heat and Magic have gotten better, the Celtics are still the team to beat. Continue Reading

I have no idea how the Miami Heat won that game last night in the nation’s capital, but hey, it goes down as a win. Of course, not many people expected the Wizards to even be in the game since they traded away Gilbert Arenas earlier in the day. But it was a gritty performance by Flip Saunders‘ squad, and adding a scorer like Rashard Lewis should help them. Make it 12 straight for the Heat now, and they are reaching their stride at the right time since they head into Los Angeles on Christmas Day to take on the Lakers. That one could be interesting. The hyped up game between the Celtics and Knicks the other night was pretty good. Last night’s hyped up game between the Heat and Knicks? Not so much. The Knicks just couldn’t make the plays defensively to stop the streaking Heat, and it’s pretty clear that the Heat are playing their best basketball of the season right now. I think most people are still hesitant to jump on the Knicks’ bandwagon, as they haven’t been able to beat the top teams when they’ve had the opportunity. But this Knicks’ team is still very good, and should give one of these top teams a scare come playoff time. Continue Reading

If you stayed up late last night, there was a great game in Denver between the Spurs and Nuggets, which saw Manu Ginobili once again make a big shot to fuel his team to victory. There’s a reason why the Spurs have the best record in the NBA, and that’s because they have veteran players who can step up in the clutch when they need them to. Even if it’s not Ginobili, it’s Tony Parker or Tim Duncan. We might have underestimated the Spurs to this point, but it’s time to realize that this is the best team in the NBA. Continue Reading

D-League Report: Antoine Walker, New Assignments, and Pace of the Game

Hi all,
Thanks for all your support on last week’s post. Here’s another look at the D-League as we head into the last couple weeks of December:

Antoine Walker to Have a Sort of Homecoming

I’ll get into this in better detail below, but one of the big games this week features Antoine Walker’s return to the East Coast as the Idaho Stampede play the Maine Red Claws. The Red Claws are affiliated by the Boston Celtics, which will give Walker his best opportunity so far to impress. Unfortunately, Walker has had to rattle of some game rust so far in his comeback effort.

Well that game certainly lived up to the hype. The Knicks-Celtics game last night in Madison Square Garden had an old school-like feel to it, and even though it may have not been considered a true rivalry in recent years, if they play more games like that, it most definitely will be. The Celtics once again found a way to make the big play in crunch time, with Paul Pierce knocking down the jumper to win it. It was yet another impressive showing from Amare Stoudemire (and the rest of the Knicks, for that matter), but it was just a case of Pierce making a tough shot in the clutch to give the Celtics the victory. We finally got to see Andrew Bynum for the first time this season last night against the Wizards, and well, it wasn’t much more than we expected. Bynum didn’t play many minutes in the Lakers’ 103-89 win over Washington, however, basketball fans know that it’s a different game when he’s in the lineup. When the Lakers are able to move Pau Gasol to power forward, it just opens up so much offensively. People can say Bynum is overrated, but there’s doubting the fact that the Lakers are a much better team when he is in the lineup. Continue Reading
